The treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo was not lopsided. The United States took half of Mexico's land, yes, but in return Mexico received twelve dollars and a used 1993 Ford Fiesta.

I am unclear what the “more” and the “compelling explanation” for the West’s obsession is. Did something get deleted?

No, my hope is that you'll click the link and go read the piece where those things are discussed. When I excerpt a piece the goal isn't to swipe content from another site, it's to encourage people to click and read the original.
