ISRAEL-PALESTINE

Two Palestinian militants reportedly gunned down an Israeli army officer at a checkpoint outside the West Bank city of Jenin early Wednesday and were subsequently shot and killed by Israeli forces. A militant group calling itself the “Jenin Brigades” claimed responsibility for the attack.

Last week the Israeli military wrapped up its investigation into the shooting of Palestinian-American reporter Shireen Abu Akleh in Jenin back in May. The inquiry concluded that there was a “high possibility” that Abu Akleh was killed by Israeli soldiers, but only “accidentally” so…oops, I guess. Israeli officials famously tried at first to pin the shooting on Palestinian gunmen before multiple Western media outlets determined independently that said scenario was all but impossible, so they’ve done what is essentially the next best thing: accepted fault in a way that absolves their personnel of any actual responsibility.
