SYRIA
At least nine people were reportedly killed on Saturday in clashes between local militias (supported by the “Eighth Brigade” unit) and Islamic State fighters in southern Syria’s Daraa province. Among them was a Syrian journalist, Atef al-Saadi, who was apparently killed by an IS sniper. The “Eighth Brigade” is part of the Syrian Army’s Fifth Corps and was organized by Russia as a unit comprised of former rebel fighters tasked with handling security issues in formerly rebel-held Daraa.
