IRAQ
Iraqi militias and their supporters protested outside Baghdad’s secure “Green Zone” on Friday to demand a full recount of last month’s parliamentary election. The militias’ political front, the Fatah Party, took a pretty thorough beating in that election, no so much for lack of votes as for lack of organization. Nevertheless, the militias have rejected the election results as fraudulent. More than 125 people were injured during Friday’s event when the protesters attempted to enter the Green Zone and were met by Iraqi security forces. According to Iraqi officials, at least, most of the casualties were among the security forces, not the demonstrators. There are now reports that at least one protester was killed though I’ve seen no details beyond that.
