In addition to being under investigation at home, Lebanese Central Bank Governor Riad Salameh may be a key figure in a European corruption investigation that has already led to the freezing of some $120 million in Lebanese assets stashed in European banks. The European Union’s criminal justice agency, Eurojust, is investigating five people alleged to have embezzled in the neighborhood of $330 million, along with a few million in euros for good measure, from Lebanon between 2002 and 2021. It’s not entirely clear if Salameh is one of those five but it seems pretty clear that he’s linked with this case in some way.
