MIDDLE EAST

SYRIA

US forces carried out a raid in northeastern Syria on Thursday evening in which they killed Hamza al-Homsi, a man US officials are describing as a “senior” figure in Islamic State. Four US personnel and a dog were wounded during the operation in some sort of explosion, which may have been Homsi blowing himself up. Speaking of Islamic State, a group of IS militants killed at least 53 civilians on Friday when they attacked a group of truffle hunters in the vicinity of Palmyra. This is the second time IS fighters have attacked a truffle hunting party in that region in less than a week.
