YEMEN
Fighting between factions of Yemen’s nominally pro-government coalition left at least 15 people, three of them civilians, dead late Sunday in the city of Ataq, capital of Yemen’s Shabwah province. The clash pitted two UAE-backed militias, the Giants Brigade and the Shabwah Defense Forces, against the Yemeni Interior Ministry’s Special Security Forces. There are reports that rockets or missiles struck Ataq’s airport, where UAE military personnel are based, on Monday. The immediate cause of the fighting seems to have been a decision by the Shabwah provincial government, which is supported by the UAE, to can a high ranking police commander who is not on good terms with the Emiratis. Yemen’s presidential council on Monday affirmed that sacking, which may help reduce tensions.
