Thoughtful and well-put. I have refrained from delving too much into the comments section in any of the stories related to this war but one that I saw which did stick with me (it was not located here) contrasted the viciousness of being caught in the Russian "sphere of influence" with the flawed-but-ultimately benign U.S. "sphere of influence"- without any apparent interest in the history of, say, the western hemisphere since at least the 1840's, to say nothing of the other U.S.-backed or instigated wars you mention in your piece. Hopefully at least a few minds are broadened by witnessing the obvious double-standards here.
Thank you for making these points without making me feel like a racist. I've been thinking about the Iraqis and the Palestinians because I was an activist in the middle east for both groups. And my grandfather was Ukrainian.

Great column, puts into words what I’ve been feeling (obviously much better than I could).
